Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 850 Mobile processor for Always Connected Windows 10 PCs

Qualcomm, with manufacturing help from Samsung, is launching the Snapdragon 850 chipset for Always Connected PCs.

Nonetheless, it seems Qualcomm is willing to give Windows 10 on ARM a dedicated chip, even if it's not built from the ground up for PCs - the Snapdragon 850 will not be used in any phones.

Since the announcement of the platform retails worldwide have signed up to offer Always Connected PCs such as the Hewlett Packard Envy X2 2-in-1. It doesn't completely rewrite the current situation, and I expect we will still find the improved performance to be lacking when compared to Intel, especially when software emulation is utilized.

Research conducted by QTI suggests that in comparison to 38 percent of consumers in the U.S. and China being willing to pay for Gigabit LTE connectivity in 2017, now, 60 percent are willing to do so. Granted, the NovaGo got less than 20 hours on our battery test, though, so that estimate might not match realworld results.

In addition, there is increased support for artificial intelligence (AI) and multimedia applications. Thermal tuning should be more fitting to a laptop form factor than a smartphone and will still allow for sleek, fanless designs.

The "always on, always connected" tagline is a key marketing point for mobile chipset-powered devices, delivering some of the most convenient benefits of smartphones to the desktop.

"We believe that 90 percent of all operators can now provide Gigabit LTE", Nunes said.

Microsoft has also come into play beyond the tech giant's operating system. At the event, Qualcomm also shared that Samsung would be the first to integrate the Snapdragon 850 into a future device.

"Qualcomm is a committed to the Always Connected PC revolution", Nunes said.

The Snapdragon 850 is built on the same second-generation 10nm process as the Snapdragon 845, and it's paired with the same X20 modem for cellular connectivity.

For 2018's flagship chipset, then, it's more of what makes Windows 10 on ARM so appealing: battery life and connectivity.

All told, Windows on Snapdragon remains an enticing platform.
