Predicting the final 16 host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Canadian soccer player Sophie Schmidt played in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup and hopes Edmonton will host some games in 2026.

Speaking at the FIFA Congress in Moscow one day before the start of the World Cup, Infantino said he would present his candidacy for elections taking place in Paris in June 2019.

The U.S., Mexico, and Canada had submitted a joint bid to host the World Cup in 2026, when the tournament will expand from 32 teams to 48. Their lone opponent was Morocco.

The last time the US hosted the World Cup was in 1994, with Brazil winning the tournament at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

There will be 60 World Cup games in 2026 to be hosted in the US and 10 in each of Canada and Mexico in the first expanded 48-team tournament.

President Donald Trump welcomed the news, tweeting: "The U.S., together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup".

"Before even giving our official candidacy of the city of Montreal (for the World Cup as part of the United 2026 bid) the (Olympic Installations Board) and the provincial government already said that they were going to invest the money in the retractable roof", Filato said.

The evaluation report also offers a "technical scoring" of the two bids, with Morocco getting 274.9 out of 500, compared to the United bid's 402.8 total.

The North American bid book published earlier this year proposed the 84,953-capacity MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside New York City for the final.

Canada has not qualified for the World Cup since 1986 - 10 years after the Olympic Stadium was supposed to have a retractable roof.

For the Asian Champions, Saudi Arabia, their best result at a World Cup was finishing in the last 16 in 1994. There was no professional league, numerous national team players came from New Jersey and California, watching live professional games from Europe was almost impossible, and the World Cup ratings from 1990 in Italy were miniscule. In short, it means games will potentially be played locally (as was the case when the USA hosted in 1994).

"Hosting a FIFA World Cup™ is an extraordinary honor and privilege", said Steven Reed, President of Canada Soccer and Co-Chair of the United Bid.

The tournament's first game, between host Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia, begins at 6 a.m. PT at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Patriots and Revs owner Robert Kraft is listed as the honorary chairman of the North American bid, and the Kraft Group launched a nonprofit, Boston 2026, to help advocate for the city (and Gillette Stadium's) inclusion in the World Cup plans.
