Shocking photos show police decked out in body armour with a local reporter warning of "an armed man".

The Paris Police Prefecture confirmed to CNN that there was "a police intervention" underway at Rue des Petites Ecuries in the 10th arrondissement of the French capital.

The man reportedly asked to speak to the Iranian embassy to deliver a message to the French government, Reuters reports. However, police have said there was no indication that the incident was terrorism-related, according to CNN.

The hostage-taker also claimed he had an accomplice outside the building with a bomb, according to Lefebvre. He's holding two hostages.

Police initially said the hostage scene was unfolding in an office in the building, but soon stopped communicating details to journalists.

One man is said to have been injured after being hit by wrench as the man - who has not been identified - entered the shop during the late afternoon on Tuesday. An Interior Ministry official said negotiations with the suspect were taking place.
