"The UN Human Rights Council has always been a problem".

The council's goal is to globally protect human rights.

They've failed to condemn the likes of Chechnya or even Zimbabwe, not current council members, so what's the point of this body which employs truckloads of functionaries in the ultra expensive capital of wealth, Geneva.

Asked about criticism of China's human rights record from the U.S., Shuang said the U.S. overlooked facts and noted that China had made significant progress on human rights, Reuters reported.

"We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights", Haley said.

"China expresses regret at the USA decision to withdraw from the U.N. Human Rights Council", China's foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a briefing on Wednesday, according to the news agency.

The United States has officially ended its membership on the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Human Rights Watch U.N. director Louis Charbonneau said the US draft General Assembly resolution "could have backfired badly and the process could have been hijacked" by the countries seeking to undermine the Human Rights Council.

The president has, in the past, been critical of the council, and has accused it of showing a bias against Israel, an ally of the U.S.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office called the US decision "courageous", calling it "an unequivocal statement that enough is enough". The United States is traditionally one of its largest donors.

Russia's United Nations mission responded in a statement that the US had tried but failed to turn the Council into an "obedient instrument for advancing their interests and punishing the countries it dislikes".

The United States is emphasizing that its pullout from the United Nations' main human rights body doesn't mean it's stopping its work with the U.N.'s rights chief.
