Nadal sweeps Thiem to claim 11th title at Roland Garros

Roland Garros final day recap Rafael Nadal's dynasty

Grant and Eberstein's outing to the home of French tennis to watch Nadal's latest clay court triumph followed the pair's recent visit to the high-speed glitz and grandeur of the Monaco Grand Prix at the end of last month.

For the first time ever Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal picked up two grand slam titles each, and the thrilling Australian Open final between the two evergreen legends was a reminder of why the match-up is viewed by most observers as the greatest rivalry in tennis, and possibly even in all of sport. "The good thing is I played a lot of good matches this clay-court season", ATP quoted Nadal as saying. Entered the Hall of Fame and admired by everyone when she went to attend the meetings of Wimbledon, Maria could not win the most important game, the one against breast cancer.

"Well, for me it's hard to explain because it becomes a little bit natural, no?"

On another day, if the result had been different in 1968, it might have been Laver in Paris presenting Nadal with the trophy. So he made the 10-hour drive back to Paris with his 88-year-old grandmother, mother and younger brother in a rental auto, then went out and won in the first round.

But he could not match Nadal's point-by-point consistency and intensity on Sunday.

Thankfully for Nadal - less so for Thiem - he was able to finish the job and continue his remarkable domination at Roland Garros with a 6-4 6-3 6-2 victory. However, here a year ago in the semi-finals, Nadal destroyed Thiem, losing just seven games in a rout, but it is worth mentioning that Thiem triumphed in their last meeting in Madrid last month, in the quarter-finals. He played a great two weeks. A spate of poor play quickly saw him lose the first three games of the set.

Thiem was considered the stiffest test for Nadal at the French Open and understandably so. He pounded huge serves, topping 135 miles per hour (220 kph) about 25 miles per hour (40 kph) more than Nadal's fastest - and that translated into seven aces, but also five double-faults.

"And the fact that I didn't give up after the one previous year here [in which she lost in three sets to Jelena Ostapenko] means that I'm strong inside and I do this just because I love this sport". The two stars have combined to win the past six Slams.

Thiem saved a first breakpoint in that game but couldn't save the second, hitting a forehand wide.

A trainer was called and he briefly inspected Nadal's left wrist.

Victory also took Nadal's record at Roland Garros to 86 wins and just two losses.

Thiem climbed to a 1-0 edge, but Nadal fought to hold a 3-1 advantage. Last year, he lost 15-13 in the fifth set of his last-16 tie against Gilles Muller.

He now has three grand slam titles since turning 30. He wound up with 42 unforced errors to Nadal's 24.

Nadal, however, averted danger with a pass after dragging Thiem in with a deft drop-shot.
