JUST IN: "We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance".

Gretchen Carlson, who chairs the organization's Board of Trustees, announced the unprecedented changes Tuesday on Good Morning America, which include scrapping the event's almost 100-year-old swimsuit contest.

Trustee Gretchen Carlson, herself a former Miss America said: 'We're not going to judge you on your appearance because we are interested in what makes you you'. "We are a competition".

By shifting the emphasis away from physical appearance and focusing instead on personality and intellect, Carlson said she believes the competition will see an "influx" of new contests and new company sponsorships.

And Miss America organizers also plan to alter the evening wear segment of the contest, so that contestants can wear whatever they wish.

The 2019 Miss America Competition is scheduled for September 9. "We should be honoring them, and that doesn't involve putting on a two-piece bathing suit and walking onstage in heels". The org is also dropping the name "pageant" in favor of labeling the Miss America event a "competition". Instead of the evening gowns, contestants will be able to choose their own evening attire to wear while discussing their "social impact initiatives".

Carlson said the Miss America Organization will emphasize its role as a scholarship provider.

But how America views women has changed drastically since then, and the Miss America Organization is run by women who don't think it's such a hot idea.

Carlson has been at the forefront of sexual-harassment issues for several years, garnering $20 million in settling a lawsuit against Fox News chief Roger Ailes in 2016.

We want want to be open, transparent, inclusive to women who may not have felt comfortable participating in our program before.

"Thousands of women have been inspired to know that they can stand up and speak up and their voices will be heard", Carlson said about the #MeToo movement on "Good Morning America".

Late previous year, a number of emails were leaked that showed conversations between the pageant's CEO Sam Haskell and others within the organization, insulting former winners' bodies, slut-shaming them, referring to them with misogynistic slurs, and even conspiring to tank their businesses and deny them their livelihood.
