Microsoft thinking of buying Github

According to Bloomberg, it's about to be taken over by Microsoft, with an official announcement of the acquisition possibly set for later today.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of the calendar year.

We spoke to outgoing GitHub CEO Chris Wanstrath and incoming GitHub CEO Nat Friedman about what will happen to the startup after Microsoft buys it for $7.5 billion. There's no word yet as to how much Microsoft paid for GitHub in this acquisition. Microsoft's work on open source has inspired the GitHub team. One simple-and costly-acquisition can have a big impact on the entire industry.

The deal, which is Microsoft's largest since the $26 billion acquisition of LinkedIn in 2016, is a big bet on its fast-growing cloud business that competes with market leader Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O). Bringing GitHub into the fold gives Microsoft a way to push its Azure cloud-computing platform to millions of highly engaged software developers.

Rumors have been circulating for a few days that Microsoft has been in discussions to acquire GitHub.

Business Insider was the first to report that the companies were holding talks last week.

The world's leading repository of open-source code is set to become part of a software giant that built its fortune on proprietary software. Primary among them is the likelihood that competitors to Microsoft would move their code repositories off GitHub, diminishing its value as a community. Some people are reporting that the deal was worth $2 billion Dollars, although they might have misread the Bloomberg post, which was talking about a $2 billion USD valuation during a round of private investments back in 2015. Wanstrath had retaken his CEO role after his co-founder Tom Preston-Werner resigned following a harassment investigation in 2014. Microsoft's own developers are regular GitHub users-in 2016, it ranked as the organization with the most contributors to the site.

There is a GitHub replacement called GitLab, but developers are still split on the news.

GitHub now hits 27 million software developers and 80 million repositories of code, according to Bloomberg.

The best thing Microsoft can do is not to do anything to GitHub for the foreseeable future.
