German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday (10 June) she was more open to French President Emmanuel Macron's plans to reform migration and defence policy in Europe than his hopes to bolster the euro.

Merkel's March 2017 visit to the White House was marked by Trump either not hearing or ignoring her offer to shake hands in the Oval Office.

On Tuesday, some senior members of Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) opted to back her hard-line Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, a Bavarian conservative who has always been a thorn in the chancellor's side over migration.

Horst Seehofer abruptly called off a press conference scheduled to announce his new asylum policy as it emerged Mrs Merkel had blocked the plans.

Despite the number of migrants effectively reaching the European Union through Albania is low, it has been surging in the last months.

"Based on Justin's false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!"

However, a new anti-establishment Italian government is also vowing to turn away migrants - it has already forced one ship to divert to Spain - and it is unclear whether she will succeed.

Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have also consistently either refused outright or resisted taking in refugees under a contested European Union quota system.

Europe will implement counter-measures against US tariffs on steel and aluminium just like Canada, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday, voicing regret about President Donald Trump's abrupt decision to withdraw support for a G7 communique.

However, some other senior party members made clear they backed Seehofer.

Closer home, Indian Twitter users spotted an opportunity to make the photo more relatable by editing Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Trump's place, asking when they would receive the Rs 15 lakhs Bharatiya Janata Party leaders promised each Indian would receive if they were voted into power in 2014. The Social Democrats, the junior partner in Merkel's grand coalition, have largely left the two conservative parties to fight it out between themselves.

"We must decide who comes to Europe, not the smugglers", said Kurz, who is due to meet with Seehofer on Wednesday.

Merkel has insisted that she wants a European solution to the issue rather than one that works for only some countries.

Seehofer also won support from Italy's far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who on Monday flatly refused to allow a rescue vessel carrying hundreds of migrants to dock.
