Kentucky fried what? KFC considers vegetarian menu options

KFC said it hopes to launch a new vegetarian option in the UK and Ireland in 2019

KFC said it hopes to launch a new vegetarian option in the UK and Ireland in 2019

The fast food joint is hoping to trial the veggie options this year, with plans make them a permanent fixture on menus across United Kingdom stores in 2019, reports Foodbeast.

Food bosses said the option for meat free chicken comes in response to "changing consumer habits".

KFC itself has a seven-year initiative to achieve such a cut in the calorie count of its servings in Britain, and said its work on vegetarian "fried chicken" was part of that.

The U.K. arm of the storied fried chicken chain is putting the idea to the test with a meatless offering that promises all the secret herbs and spices without the company's best-known ingredient.

The company said that after perfecting the recipe, it aims to test it with customers "and if all goes well, we hope to launch a new vegetarian option in 2019".

Here's to KFC stepping into the fake meat game.

KFC has also promised to use the same 11 herbs and spice mix in the new item that is used in its regular fried chicken variety.

McDonald's introduced a soy-based McVegan burger to its restaurants in Sweden and Finland in late December.

That said, KFC's vegetarian offering is unlikely to come to the United States anytime soon, with KFC's US team telling Foodbeast there are "no plans related to the U.K.'s test at this time". In April, White Castle introduced a plant-based version of its cheese slider in its stores in New York, New Jersey and Chicago. Earlier this spring, White Castle started selling the Impossible Burger and late past year, McDonald's announced that the McVegan would become a permanent menu item in Finland and Sweden.

Restaurant consultant Aaron Allen told USA Today more restaurant companies would release vegetarian options.

"How sharply has vegetarianism increased in the U.S.?" "We're talking about millions of people dramatically changing their diets".
