Julen Lopetegui: Real Madrid hires Spain coach as Zidane successor

A statement from the club read, "Julen Lopetegui will be the coach of Real Madrid after the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation".

Real have announced that after the tournament he will take over at the Bernabeu, stepping into the role that Zidane Zidane vacated following his shock departure at the end of May - just days after guiding Real to a third consecutive Champions League title.

The search to replace Zinedine Zidane, who left after guiding Real to a third-straight Champions League title, lasted nearly two weeks, with Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp among the names reportedly in the frame.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea's Antonio Conte were also touted as potential appointments.

"Pochettino quite clearly didn't even have the chance to say yes or no because Real Madrid did not want to negotiate with Daniel Levy".

"After that, it was a case of guessing for us".

Lopetegui previously managed Porto for two years, before taking over at the Spanish national team in July 2016.

The centre-half has instead told Real Madrid to sign Atletico Madrid keeper, Jan Oblak, this summer.

"Lopetegui will be the coach of the first team during the next three seasons".

The 51-year-old will take up the position after the World Cup, which begins on 14 June.

Gareth Bale will wait until Zinedine Zidane's successor has been named at Real Madrid before deciding on his future, according to reports.

Lopetegui will put to pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Bernabéu running until 2021, the club confirmed. He then had the opportunity to go to Wolves, when the new owners came in.
