Johnson back in top form before US Open

Dustin Johnson back to world No 1 after St Jude victory

Phil Mickelson began the day one stroke off the lead but shot an even-par 70 and is tied for 14th.

"I have high expectations going into every week", Johnson said when asked about the U.S. Open. "It seems like it's been a long time even though it's just been six months (since I won)".

Johnson and Putnam were tied for the lead at 15 under after the third round and were five strokes clear of the rest of the field.

It was his second PGA Tour win of 2018. The best U.S. Open finish by a victor of the St. Jude in the same year was a tie for third by Fred Couples in 1993, when the event was conducted two weeks before the Open.

Johnson spent 64 weeks atop the world ranking until Justin Thomas made the cut at the Players Championship in May and grabbed the top spot to himself.

Johnson tied Tiger Woods for the most wins since 2008 (18) and his second St. Jude win was his ninth since the beginning of 2016. Snedeker turned in a bogey-free round with eight birdies needing only 22 putts. "I like this golf course, and I feel like I play it well and wanted to be on top of my game going into next week, too". He knows it will be the biggest Sunday of his career as he plays in the final pairing for the first time.

Dustin Johnson has set his sights on making US Open history after returning to world No 1 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. "I've been swinging really well and have a lot of confidence in my game, and I played really well all week".

"By the reaction from the crowd, I thought it might have gone in, but I couldn't see it so it was kind of tough", said Johnson after shooting 66.

"I hit a lot of great shots in there, had a lot of good looks at birdie".

At the 445-yard par-4 sixth, Bryan got on in 2 and missed his par putt from 4 feet, finishing with a 3-putt bogey.

Playing the 18th hole with a four-stroke lead on Sunday in Memphis, Tenn., Johnson holed out for eagle from 171 yards for a dynamic finish.

He had won his only two previous starts at the event, the only PGA Tour wins of his career.
