Suicide rates rising 'significantly' across America CDC reveals in new report

Suicide rates increased significantly in almost every state from 1999 through 2016, with nearly 45,000 people taking their own lives in 2016 alone, according to a report released Thursday.

"The shocking statistic is to see Oklahoma's rate has changed so significantly", said Julie Summers, Mental Health Association Oklahoma's director of outreach and prevention.

Despite this, she said there are studies that show a rise in teen suicide during the time the series began streaming.

In a study of these laws in two states, in and CT, researchers at the University of Indianapolis found that the legislation led to reductions in gun-related suicides, compared with the expected numbers: they were 7.5 per cent lower in IN in the decade after enactment, and 13.7 per cent lower in CT in the year since strict enforcement began. By 2016, nearly 45,000 Americans were taking their own lives every year.

In New Orleans, researchers led by Orleans Parish Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Rouse also recently studied the high rates of suicide in the city even a decade after Hurricane Katrina. For half of the states, the increase exceeded 30 percent.

The number of self-inflicted deaths in 2016 - roughly the equivalent of the entire population of Murray, Utah - placed suicide as the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.

"It's important that we think about this in more broad terms than just as a mental health condition", Schuchat says. "Essentially every age group other than those over 75". From 1999 to 2016, 49 states saw suicides increase by 5 percent or more, and 25 of those states saw increases of a staggering 30 percent or higher.

Firearms were the most commonly reported method of suicides (48.5%), though decedents with known mental health conditions were less likely to die by firearm (40.6%) and more likely to use strangulation (31.3%) or poisoning (19.8%) than those without (26.9% and 10.4%, respectively). They were also more likely to commit a homicide followed by suicide (aOR = 2.9, 95% CI = 2.2-3.8) than the latter group. That indicates a large portion weren't diagnosed, "which suggests to me that they're not getting the help they need", he said. In that time stretch, guns were used in 53 percent of suicides.

"We know that prevention programs work and can be effective in reducing this tragedy", Shuchat said.

Schuchat said that many factors can increase a person's suicide risk, including relationship problems, substance abuse, physical and mental health, job and money issues, and legal problems.

Effective strategies, she said, included teaching coping and problem-solving skills for those at risk, establishing more social "connectedness", as well as safe storage of pills and guns. "What are we doing as a nation to help people to manage these things?" "We are concerned with all aspects of suicide prevention, including access to lethal means, and so we do include that in a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention".

'Conditions like postpartum depression and menopause [may put some women at a higher risk], and, for women in general, stereotypes of being the ideal mom and employee, the stigma associated with a need to "balance" all of that can cause pressure as well, ' said Dr Ali.
