Guatemala volcano eruption leaves at least 25 dead

Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted on Sunday for the second time this year, leaving at least 7 people dead and 20 injured, Guatemalan officials said.

Another 20 people have been injured, and more than 2,000 evacuated near the volcano and several cities, including Antigua.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Conred) said a river of lava hit the village of El Rodeo, destroying houses and burning people inside. National Disaster Coordinator Sergio Cabanas said seven people were confirmed dead and an unknown number were unaccounted for.

"Unfortunately El Rodeo was buried and we haven't been able to reach the La Libertad village because of the lava and maybe there are people that died there too".

At least seven people were killed and many more injured in the eruption of Volcan de Fuego, near Guatemala City.

The Volcan del Fuego, roughly 27 miles from Guatemala City, shot ash almost four miles into the sky.

One video published by news outlet Telediario, purportedly taken in the El Rodeo village, showed three bodies strewn atop the remnants of the flow as rescuers arrived to attend to an elderly man caked from head to toe in ash and mud.

Cabanas said that the dead included a civil protection official and others trapped by muddy material that descended from the 3 763m volcano.

Hundreds of rescue workers, including firefighters, police and soldiers, worked to help any survivors and recover any more bodies amid the still-smoking lava.

David de León, spokesman for the disaster agency, said about 300 people had evacuated the area around the volcano.

Ash has effected not only Guatemala City but the departments of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and the popular tourist destination colonial town Antigua.

Aviation authorities closed the capital's global airport because of the danger posed to planes by the ash.

The huge plumes of smoke that could be seen from various parts of the country and the ash that fell in four of Guatemala's departments caused alarm among residents.

The conical Volcan de Fuego reaches an altitude of 12,346 feet above sea level at its peak.
