Police secure the Berliner Dom after a German policeman shot a man at the Berlin Cathedral

German police on Sunday shot a man who had rampaged through the Berlin Cathedral, police in the German capital said on Twitter, urging the public not to spread rumours.

Footage posted online showed armed police officers cordoning off the area around the Cathedral - one of Berlin's most popular tourist attractions - with two ambulances parked at the entrance.

It's not yet known what has caused the incident but a police spokesperson confirmed the incident to Reuters.

Officials said the suspect was 53 years old, but did not identify him.

There was no immediate indication the man's reported actions were linked to terrorism, Berlin police spokesman Winfrid Wenzel said. On Sunday at 4pm, local time, police put a stop to a rampaging man waving a knife.

A tweet by Berlin police asked people to not speculate about what happened.

Both the suspect and the police officer were taken to hospital.

Initial reports had said the officer was seriously wounded.

Police cleared the cathedral and tried to calm the man.
