Briton Thomas takes Dauphine lead as Ireland's Martin wins stage

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas has won the 70th Criterium du Dauphine in France by exactly one minute.

Thomas held off Briton Adam Yates, victor of the concluding seventh stage, with France's Romain Bardet taking third in the overall standings. "Romain Bardet was trying to overtake me in the GC but every time I responded". Now I realise I've won a massive race. Bilbao made his move late on during the gruelling stage that is nearly the same as stage 11 in the Tour de France next month, with four major climbs and a summit finish at la Rosiere.

"I think these four days are the hardest four days I've raced in a one-week stage race", said Thomas.

"The Tour de France has been my goal since start of season, but the Volta a Catalunya set things back", Yates said about crashing out of the Catalonia tour in March.

The 32-year-old Thomas, victor of Paris-Nice in 2016, is coming into form at just the right time with the Tour de France a month away.

"From the start of the year I said I wanted to get there [the Tour de France] in the best shape possible and I'm on course for that".

Pello Bilbao won the penultimate stage of the Criterium du Dauphine that finished after 110km in La Rosière Espace San Bernardo today.

"Each kilometre I was more confident and happier". Emanuel Buchmann (GER/BOR) 1:02, 7. Thomas came in second, managing to put further valuable seconds between himself and his rivals for the yellow leader. Geraint Thomas (GBR/SKY) 19, 6. Romain Bardet (FRA/ALM) 2:01, 4. Dan Martin (IRL/EAU) 24, 7.

Thomas now leads Yates by 1:29 in the overall standings. Pierre Latour (FRA) AG2R La Mondiale +35 10.
