Chief Scott Freeman of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department made it clear his decision to fire one of his officers was not an easy one, but the evidence left him with no choice.

Police say the suspect, Timmy Patmon, ran away when Officer Blackmon got out of the police cruiser and approached him. He was wanted on a felony probation warrant and taken into custody after being released from the hospital.

A rookie police officer has been fired for hitting a suspect with his patrol vehicle while he was attempting to flee of foot.

Officer Saulters followed in the patrol auto. Patmon continues down the street and its then Saulters while veering right hits Patmon. "He hit the ground, but I mean... he was running this way... and he ran into the hood of my vehicle and bounced off". An unknown woman can be heard saying "You didn't have to hit that man like that".

Patmon was running from police on foot and Saulters attempted to block Patmon's path as his partner, Officer Hunter Blackmon, chased the suspect on foot. "Give us your hands now, or you're gonna get Tased", Saulters says. "If you still have concerns I will discuss them with you if you contact me".

But Saulters was undeterred, and drove at Patmon again, this time hitting him with such force from behind that he rolled up the auto hood and over its windshield before falling on the pavement.

When the young man doesn't immediately stand up as instructed by Saulters, saying he's hurt from getting hit with his auto, Saulters tells him: "Oh, I know, I know what I did".

Patmon is charged with violating his probation and obstructing a law enforcement officer.

Saulters, who was immediately placed on administrative leave, was sacked on Saturday after it was determined he violated department policy. "I know what I did".

Although the PD says it believes Saulters' actions were negligence rather than a deliberate attempt to hurt someone, he is now being probed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and could face criminal charges.
