American allies are fuming over new tariffs on steel and aluminum imported into the USA, and over the president saying those tariffs will strengthen national security.

Trump, who repeated that his tariffs are meant to protect U.S. industry and workers from unfair worldwide competition, told reporters he had suggested to the other G7 leaders that all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies, be eliminated.

The fraught, contentious summit was like none other in memory, upending decades of global cooperation on trade and policy with America's most steadfast allies, from Canada, Japan and Europe.

White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the characterizations by these officials of Mr Trump's remarks or attention to the presentations.

Trump had warned hours earlier that the United States would not allow the continued imposition of trade barriers by other nations. He said the argument that Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum are a matter of national security are "kind of insulting".

"The nature of the debate we had was rather appeasement and it stopped the escalation in terms of behavior", Macron, who had exchanged terse Twitter messages with Trump in the run-up to the summit, told reporters. "I would say the relationship is a 10", Trump said. "They do so much more business with us, than we do with them, that we can't lose", Trump said, adding: "The numbers are so astronomically against them".

"The U.S. has been taken advantage of for decades and decades, and we can't do that anymore", Trump said. The noise of Mr Trump's helicopter landing was so loud they had to stop talking for a while, in a scene one official compared to the opening from the United States television series M.A.S.H.

European Union countries, which make up four of the group's seven members, agreed ahead of the summit that "a return of Russian Federation to the G7-format summits can't happen until substantial progress has been made in connection with the problems with Ukraine", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said as the summit began on June 8.

In return, Mr Trump made the French president his guest at his first White House state dinner, after which the U.S. president said of his visitor: "I like him a lot". To United States, frankly, it would be a good thing but I'm not looking to do that.

Both Moscow and Mr Trump have denied the allegations.

Larry Kudlow, the president's top economic adviser and a staunch advocate of free trade, said the suggestion of no tariffs led to productive discussions with the other world leaders. "You know you have to ask President Obama because he was the one who let Crimea get away; that was during his administration", he said.

Mr Trump left the summit early for Singapore, where he will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un next week.

The US had nevertheless appeared to agree a form of words on contentious issues thanks to an all-night negotiating session by officials from all sides.

There was also an agreement to disagree on climate change in the wake of Trump's decision to leave the Paris climate accord previous year which further underlined the divide between the Group of Seven's powerhouse and its six co-members.
