Italy's Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte (R) talks with European Parliament President Antonio Tajani during a ceremony marking the anniversary of the Italian Republic (Republic Day) on June 2, 2018 in Piazza Venezia, in Rome.

Newly appointed Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte celebrated the age old Festa della Repubblica to mark the 72nd Italian Republic Day on the 2nd of June to mark the beginning of Italy's Third Republic - and the very first populist government in western Europe.

Tria was named as economy minister after the man previously proposed for the job by the ruling coalition, eurosceptic economist Paolo Savona, was vetoed by the head of state because of critical views he had expressed about the euro.

Giuseppe Conte was also sworn in as Italy's prime minister.

The 53-year-old academic heads a government of ministers from the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) and the far-right League, the first populist coalition in a founding European Union member.

The two populist party leaders are both deputy prime ministers as well as key ministers in the new government.

President Sergio Mattarella, who negotiated three months of political deadlock to finally find a workable government, presided over the ceremony in the opulent Quirinale Palace in Rome.

One of his shows was called "Never Say Italy" and in 2011, he won notoriety for boycotting Italy's 150-year anniversary celebrations, putting his desk outside Milan city hall to show he was working.

The coalition deal turns the page on months of political turmoil following an inconclusive election in March which had raised jitters among Italy's European partners.

Only five days earlier, the leader of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, Luigi Di Maio, was inciting followers to press for Mattarella's impeachment.

Its proposals - which include a monthly basic income for Italy's poorest and a two tier "flat" tax - have anxious Brussels and the financial markets given Italy's massive 2.3 trillion euro ($2.7 trillion) debt.

Italy's populist parties on Thursday agreed to form a coalition government, almost three months after an inconclusive March 4 general election.

"New possibilities have emerged for the birth of a political government", Cottarelli was quoted as saying by ANSA news agency, implying that a government headed by politicians rather than technocrats like himself could be in the offing.

In a recent video on his Facebook page, which has more than two million fans, Salvini said he would work to "stop the landings" once in power.

Conte's deputy premiers are his two more seasoned political masters: Di Maio and Matteo Salvini, head of the League.

"The immigration question remains a hot-button issue, even if the number of new arrivals has fallen", said Salvini, an ally of French far-right leader Marine Le Pen.

"That must not happen again in the present case with Italy", Juncker said.

"The good times for illegals is over - get ready to pack your bags", Salvini said at a rally in Italy's north on Saturday, adding however that he wants to economically assist migrants' countries of origin.
