Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for First Man, the highly anticipated third feature film from Oscar-winning Whiplash and La La Land filmmaker Damien Chazelle.

The first trailer premiered Friday, June 8, timed with Ryan Gosling's appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live".

Based on James R. Hansen's 2005 book First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, the film chronicles the life of the American astronaut and his journey towards becoming the first man to land on the moon.

One reporter asks him his thoughts of how he would go down in history for his achievement, "if this flight is successful".

Chazelle has rounded up a spectacular cast, which includes Kyle Chandler, Pablo Schreiber, Jason Clarke, Ciaran Hinds and Corey Stoll, among others and it has our space nerd sense tingling. We then get a glimpse at several key moments in Armstrong's life as he prepares to become the first human being ever to set foot on the moon. Speaking to another reporter, Armstrong mentioned that down on Earth you look up and don't think too much about the moon.

"There are risks, but we have every intention of coming back", Armstrong tells his son in the preview. Produced by Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen alongside Chazelle and Gosling, First Man opens in theaters on October 12th.
