Published June 7, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (C.D.C.) study analyzed data collected by states on deaths from 1999-2016. When some younger reporters at a major national news organization urged that the suicide hotline be publicized following last week's deaths, an editor said that it wasn't their job because "we're not social workers", said Kelly McBride, media ethicist for the Poynter Institute. "From individuals and communities to employers and healthcare professionals, everyone can play a role in efforts to help save lives and reverse this troubling rise in suicide". More than half of people who died by suicide did not have a known mental health condition.

The rate of suicide is highest in middle age - white men in particular. Clearly, we needn't wait for yet another celebrity or loved one to self-destruct before launching a sustained and aggressive campaign to repel suicide and its many complex triggers.

"Because people so rarely talk about suicide, the days on which we talk about nearly nothing else hit especially hard". Suicide is an all too common problem and even affects those who seem to have it all together. The male suicide rate, meantime, rose 21 percent. We lose one person between the ages of 10-24 every four days, and every day we lose at least one person over the age of 45, with adults in midlife and older adults remaining at higher risk. While mental illness is not a transmittable disease, there are many studies suggesting suicide can, in a way, be contagious.

The CDC report comes at a time of heightened attention to the issue with the suicide this week of designer Kate Spade. "A traumatic event is a strong data point, any significant life event that the person is presenting saying they are baffled and are running out of solutions to their problems". "Talk to them, ask if they need help, and know the resources that are available".

"We really aren't sure". "Rather than understanding their mental health, they get medication to treat the symptoms". It should also serve as a clarion call for all to vow to aggressively address the underlying mental-health and other causes of suicide and to commit to reducing its appalling toll. It's important to remove access to firearms, medications, or any other potential tools they might use to harm themselves.

Negative life experiences can trigger suicidal thoughts such as death of a loved one, divorce/separation, a serious illness, a terminal illness, chronic physical pain, sexual, physical or verbal abuse, legal or financial problems, to name a few.
