On the Republican side, businessman Shawn Moody leads, with former Maine Heath and Human Services Director Mary Mayhew, Maine Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason, and State House Minority Leader Ken Fredette not too far behind. But this year, Democrats are poised to finally make that jump.

Nevada is a state where Democrats see Clinton as an asset, especially in a Democratic primary.

Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani announces her campaign for governor outside of Las Vegas Academy in downtown Las Vegas on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017.

In Tuesday's Virginia primary, six Democrats are vying to challenge the incumbent Republican, Rep. Barbara Comstock, in a highly competitive race just outside the nation's capital. One seat they're targeting is in Nevada.

Comstock is expected to prevail over Hill in her primary, but will then face one of six Democrats who are running in their own Tuesday primary.

Heitkamp, 62, is stressing her work for her state's agriculture and energy interests, along with her votes with Republicans on legislation rolling back Dodd-Frank rules for regional and community banks and for some of Trump's nominees, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In a year in which a record number of women are running for office, there are notable races featuring female candidates. But Hillary Clinton carried the district easily in the 2016 presidential race, so many analysts believe an energized Democratic base could carry the day in November. In Arlington County, voters will choose between two Democrats to run against incumbent County Board member John Vihstadt (I). Arrington, now a state representative, is challenging Sanford for the 1st Congressional District seat. He's a self-described inspirational speaker who has lambasted Comstock for criticizing Trump after the release of his "Access Hollywood" tape, opposing his efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and opposing the administration's proposed ban on transgender people in the military. The front-runner is Elaine Luria, a Navy veteran and businesswoman who's been endorsed by the party.

Democrats in VA-06: Candidates are Jennifer Lewis, Peter Volosin, Charlotte Moore, Sergio Coppola; Republicans have nominated Del. Gov. Sandoval, who is leaving after serving a maximum two terms, cruised to re-election in 2014 after no high-profile Democrats emerged to oppose him. The message being put out: Don't let Democrats take over the Carson City statehouse and turn Nevada into another California, strategists say.

"We came to realize that people were rising up and realizing that we can't sit on the sidelines anymore, and I came to realize that I can't do that either", she said in an interview.

And in the 6th and 9th districts, Democrats will pick their candidates for Congress.

An April 12-19 poll by the Nevada Independent and The Mellman Group showed Heller had support of 40 percent of likely voters and Rosen had 39 percent, a dead heat.

"I'm prepared to make that vote but I'm not prepared to make a vote on something I haven't read", she said.
