DeChambeau leads by one, Woods in the hunt at Memorial

Bryson DeChambeau ended an action-packed Saturday by making one of only six birdies on the par-3 16th hole, saving par with a tough flop shot from behind the 17th green and finishing off a 6-under 66 with a 9-iron into 5 feet.

Woods bogeyed No. 16 and No. 18 to finish the day with a four-under 68.

"I'm in position. Hopefully I'm not too far back", he said.

Woods' statistics this week are as stunning as they are telling.

"If I just putt normally, I'm probably there with those guys in the last couple groups", Woods said after his round, according to Tiger Tracker.

The 4-foot miss for par on the final hole certainly contributed to his fiery mood.

Those numbers are indicative of how well Woods' iron game and short game have been.

Another challenge came from Tiger Woods as the five-time Memorial victor hung on to his place among the contenders during a four-under-par 68 to improve his tournament total to nine under. "It will be a very different golf course, but overall if I hit the ball like this, I'll be pleased in two weeks".

Woods put it down to a mechanical issue with his putting, one that he worked on Friday night after his round.

Kyle Stanley made four straight birdies and stood on the 72nd tee tied for the Memorial Tournament lead on Sunday, but an unlucky break made his route to the title that much more hard.

Woods was another shot behind, and it looked as though he was about to post his lowest score of the year. "That's what I play for".

He hit 12 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens.

In his fifth start as a pro, Niemann finished with two birdies over his last three holes for a 4-under 68 and a share of the lead with Kyle Stanley, who had a 66.

Adam Scott is the leading Australian at eight under following a two-under 70, while countryman Jason Day struggled to capitalise on his solid play during the first two rounds.

"Just keep thinking about those two 3-footers I missed, " said DeChambeau, who was at 14-under 202. For the week, Woods had five three-putt greens and missed seven putts inside 5 feet. Even though I missed [some] little 3-footers, I still think I'm rolling it really well and have a great chance for tomorrow.
