There was a stop in Detroit at approximately 6 o'clock in the morning' said owner Michael Dellegrazie's attorney Evan Oshan.'Alejandro was checked on. He was fine. Then approximately at 8 o'clock and 8:30 in the morning the dog was again checked

"He's not just a pet, we lost a member of our family", Dellegrazie said Alejandro was a happy, friendly dog that he shared with his girlfriend. A Pomeranian dog by the name of Alejandro has reportedly died on a Delta Airlines flight from Phoenix, Arizona to Newark, New Jersey.

According to Delta, Alejandro was checked on during a stop in Detroit, Michigan and again two hours later.

The Pomeranian, called Alejandro, was found dead Wednesday morning in its carrier in a cargo facility at the airport, southwest of Detroit in Romulus.

"Delta offered to have Alejandro evaluated by a veterinarian while in our possession to find out more about why this may have occurred", the airlane said in the statement.

"When he landed here in MI, he was alive at 6.30am and then at 8.20am, he wasn't moving and it just doesn't make any sense to me", owner Michael Dellagrazie told WDIV-TV. Delta disputes this, noting it was Alejandro's owners who made a decision to put the dog in a kennel.

The Delta spokesperson also told Newsweek that the airline offered the couple several times to perform an independent necropsy on Alejandro, but was turned down. "The dog is not a pet".

In a statement to Newsweek, Delta Airlines said they are working with Alejandro's family and are conducting a review of the situation.

Oshan says he's determined to get to the bottom of the incident, so no other family has to go through this pain again.

Oshan says the family plans to take the dog's body to an independent agency for an autopsy to determine the cause of his death, Fox 2 reports. The changes don't affect pets in the cabin.

Delta, however, tells us it did not push the passengers to store their dog in cargo.it was their choice.

In another case, a 10-year-old German Shepard wound up on a United Airlines flight to Japan while his family landed in Kansas.

In 2017, according to data from the Department of Transportation, out of the 506,994 animals transported by USA airlines, there were 24 pet deaths, 15 injured and one loss.
