Massive salmonella outbreak linked to backyard chicken flocks

Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development supervisors say 32 people in Michigan have become ill because of the outbreak.

So far all the illnesses in Missouri have been traced to melon purchased at Walmart stores, but the CDC said the investigation is ongoing and the alert may expand to include other chains.

Walmart and Kroger have removed the cut melon products from their stores and area cooperating with a Centers for Disease Control investigation. No deaths have been reported from the bacterial infections, but 31 people have been hospitalized.

MI has reported 32 cases of illness, and IN has reported 11.

Last year, the CDC reported the largest number of salmonella illnesses linked to backyard flocks after the lifestyle trend emerged across the country.

Health officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of salmonella linked to the consumption of pre-cut melons purchased at grocery stores.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says if you have any pre-cut melon from Walmart, throw it out.

It's not just Walmart pre-cut melon. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria.

Currently, the outbreak is limited to five states in the Midwest, with 32 of the 60 cases in MI.
