Portugal bowed out early in the last two World Cups, but there is a sense that the Selecao will be able to contend this time around, namely due to their captain, who was in outstanding form this season, scoring 44 goals for Real Madrid in all competitions.

Lionel Messi (left) and Cristiano Ronaldo (right) are universally considered to be the two greatest players of their generation, if not all time.

And just last November, he reiterated his belief that Messi is the best player in history, according to TyC Sports.

And in the process, the 41-year-old has nailed the difference between the Real Madrid and Barcelona maestros.

Lionel Messi, and it isn't even close.

Messi is, however, back in the mix at Russian Federation 2018 and will be desperate to get his hands on the top prize and enhance his standing as an all-time great. Social media is divided between the Messi and the Ronaldo cult with "fanboys" who take every opportunity to sling mud at each other on Twitter. For Ronaldo, it would at least put him in that conversation. Argentina has been the world's most underachieving national team; it last won a major title in 1993.

The year prior to that comment, he voted for Messi to win the Ballon d'Or over Ronaldo. That was followed by a pair of losses in the final of the 2015 and 2016 Copa America. "But there is so much more to football than just scoring goals", says Muhammad Butt, who works as features editor for football data specialists Squawka. Such is the hysteria that Messi's biographer, Sebastian Fest, said it had got to the stage where "it nearly amuses him not to sing it". Other taller players in the Argentina team including Maximiliano Meza, Lucas Biglia and Angel Di Maria will man-mark their rivals.

"I am not saying the best players always make a difference, but they are the ones that can make a difference".

Ronaldo recovered from that Iceland setback to help inspire Portugal to Euro glory so Messi would doubtless settle for a similar disappointment if it meant clasping hands on the World Cup trophy at the Luzhniki Stadium on July 15.
