Russian Telecom Watchdog Gives Apple One Month to Respond to Request to Remove Telegram from App Store

Popular iPhone and Android chat app Telegram ran into some serious issues with the Russian government, which banned the app a few weeks ago, taking additional steps to prevent users from accessing it. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple plans to build on its existing system for selling ads within App Store search results, enabling iOS developers to get paid to display Apple-offered ads within in-app searches.

In a post on his own Telegram channel today, Durov apologised for some features not working under just-released iOS 11.4.

Telegram refused to provide Russian authorities with a way to read communications over its network as Moscow pushes to increase surveillance of internet activities. This has been happening since April when Russian Federation first sent its request to Google and Apple to block push notifications and updates on for the app. Earlier this week, speaking to local newspapers, director of Roskomnadzor (Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media) said that the country has asked Apple to help Russia block Telegram.

In a statement posted today, Durov notes that no updates have been approved ever since Russian Federation ordered Apple to remove the messaging app from the App Store because it wouldn't provide decryption keys to its user's communications.

"As a result, we've also been unable to fully comply with GDPR for our European Union users by the deadline of 25 May 2018".

App updates are essential to bolster the security of users and their data, and to comply with privacy laws and regulation. We are continuing our efforts to resolve the situation and will keep you updated.

Unfortunately, this block has affected all Telegram users.

Apple hasn't responded to emails from us or from other publications such as Reuters and BBC.

"Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience".

So, in one example used by the report, Snapchat users searching for the National Football League might see an advertisement for ticket re-selling apps like StubHub.
