The strongest of those storms could bring damaging wind gusts, according to the weather service. A cold front will drop in from the north with soaking thunderstorms beginning around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Numerous strong to severe thunderstorms will develop again Sunday from Colorado to northern MI.

A heat advisory will be effect from 1 p.m.to 6 p.m. Monday.

A dozen or so school districts including Enfield and Manchester public schools opted to send children home early given the forecast for scorching temperatures. Some libraries, park facilities, police stations and other city-operated places serve as cooling centers in the evenings and weekends.

With the heat index potentially rising to 102 degrees on Monday and with the high temperature expected to reach 94 degrees, those who work outside are at risk of heat-related illnesses, the National Weather Service reports. An air quality alert, in effect from 11 a.m.to 10 p.m. Monday, says there may be unhealthy concentrations of smog in Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties.

The service warns that strong-to-severe thunderstorms sweeping into the region could impact evening commuters.

Any storms that develop have the potential to bring damaging wind gusts, heavy rain and risky lightning. The evening commute may be affected. With the water temperature in the low 60s, it will help to temper the heat, keeping highs around in the 80s for most of RI, and even cooler along the immediate coast. If you have to be outside for an extended period of time, make sure you stay hydrated and wear light colored clothing, and take frequent breaks.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo also advised New Yorkers to avoid outdoor physical activity following air quality health advisories with elevated levels of ozone in the air.
