U.S. evacuates China staffers as illness mystery deepens

The U.S. Embassy in China on Friday sent out an alert to Americans traveling overseas that they needed to seek medical attention immediately if they start to experience similar symptoms shared by U.S. staffers in China and Cuba.

That word comes from three USA officials.

A State Department official says they are "potentially new cases" but not yet "medically confirmed".

A US medical team has been screening more personnel and their family members who work in Guangzhou this week in order to determine who may have been affected.

Cuba said it remained ready to work with the United States to determine what, if anything, was causing the illnesses after its own investigation had uncovered no evidence of foul play.

The bulk of cases took place between the end of 2016 and the summer of 2017, with symptoms including hearing loss, cognitive impairment, vertigo, insomnia or vision problems.

If confirmed by doctors to have the same condition, the two individuals would mark the 25th and 26th confirmed patients from the freaky incidents in Cuba that were first disclosed a year ago and have been deemed "specific attacks" by the US government.

The alert urged Americans to seek medical help in the event they suffered any "unusual, unexplained physical symptoms or events, auditory or sensory phenomena, or other health concerns". "The Ministry of Foreign Relations reiterates that no evidence of the alleged incidents has been presented, and maintains its unwavering commitment to cooperate with US authorities".

USA officials said Friday that they had pulled two workers from Cuba and were testing them for possible brain injury.

Earlier this week, a number of USA personnel in China have been sent back to Washington for further health screenings after concerns over reports of mysterious acoustic incidents similar to the Cuba "sonic attacks", CNN reported.

The case revived fears that a United States rival has developed some kind of acoustic or microwave device after similar symptoms were reported among American diplomats and their families in Cuba in 2016.

The U.S.is working alongside China to uncover the source of the "abnormal sounds". The Canadian government followed suit in April and directed the families of diplomatic staff in Cuba to return home.
