Zuckerberg agrees to closed-door talks with MEPs

Mark Zuckerberg agrees to meeting with EU officials in Brussels

But he will not appear before the British parliamentary committee investigating the matter, but rather has agreed to appear before the European parliament at a closed-door meeting.

Mark Zuckerberg will appear before the European Parliament to discuss Facebook's use of personal data, weeks after declining to give evidence to UK Parliament. The other half of the Parliament wanted the Facebook's founder to publically answer the questions in front of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.

"Our citizens deserve a full and detailed explanation", he added.

"I appreciate that Mark Zuckerberg has chose to present himself in front of the representatives of 500 million Europeans", he said.

Facebook admitted earlier this month that up to 87 million users may have had their data hijacked by British consultancy Cambridge Analytica, which worked for US President Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign.

But let's at least be thankful that Zuckerberg has shown us, once again, how very much privacy matters - to him personally...

In March, UK Conservative lawmaker Damian Collins demanded Zuckerberg provide evidence to the Commons committee pertaining to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, but the billionaire refused, opting to only front the US Congress.

His concern and even frustration that the leadership of the EP agreed to hold a meeting behind closed doors, was expressed by a number of parliamentarians.

"I'm glad that mark Zuckerberg has accepted the invitation from the EP and come to Brussels to answer questions about privacy".

That suggests he will avoid an uncomfortable public appearance and instead meet only with the legislature's top brass behind closed doors.

Further, the nod to speaking with European Union lawmakers comes at a time when Zuckerberg has thrice denied requests from United Kingdom lawmakers, to take questions about his platform in a public hearing.

He might get tougher questions in Brussels, where an assertive new European data protection law comes into effect on May 25. "It's a step in the right direction towards restoring confidence".

Parliament's media committee said Thursday that Alexander Nix had accepted a summons to appear June 6.

On 7 April 2018, Facebook suspended the myPersonalty app from the Facebook platform as part of its clean up of third party applications and its investigation into misuse of user data.
