WhatsApp Gets New Group Features, Including Descriptions, Mentions, and Admin Controls

Group description:A short blurb found under group info that allows you to set the goal, guidelines, or topics for the group. The new group chat features are rolling out now worldwide to both iOS and Android users with the latest versions of their respective apps.

In addition to this change for WhatsApp group chat, the service is also launching a new feature called Catch Up - allowing users to see a quick recap of messages that have mentioned or replied to you since you've been away. The description will be shared with each new member of the WhatsApp group chat - allowing those having a discussion to stay on topic.

However, perhaps the most handy feature is the new "group catch up" tool, which will help users keep track of active groups, while they're away. "There are also people coming together in groups on WhatsApp like new parents looking for support, students organizing study sessions, and even city leaders coordinating relief efforts after natural disasters".

In group settings, there's now a control that allows admins to restrict who can change the group's subject, icon, and description.

While these changes to WhatsApp group chat have generally been well-received, there have been some actions from the company in the past few months that have drawn the ire of a significant population in India.

Another important feature being added is it lets you avoid that inconvenience when someone adds you to Groups when you actually left intentionally. "Today, we're sharing improvements that we've made to groups". Administrators can revoke admin permissions and also prevent the group's creator from being removed from the group.

WhatsApp users can now also use the new mentions feature in groups. To find these messages, WhatsApp group users will only have to tap the @ button that now appears at the bottom-right corner of the chat. You can simply search for any participant by going to the "Group Info" page. WhatsApp says the tool is created to help users quickly get up to speed inside a group after being away from the chat.
