Apple's Tim Cook tells graduates to be fearless

Such was a moment for the Apple CEO Tim Cook when he had gone back to his Alma Matter Duke for the commencement speech for the 2018 graduates.

".we choose a different path, collecting as little of your data a possible, being thoughtful and respectful when it's in our care because we know it belongs to you", he said. This, on the other hand, would not be the first time when Cook targeted Facebook.

"I wouldn't be in this situation", Cook told reporters from Recode and MSNBC in March.

"The truth is, we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer - if our customer was our product", Cook said then. We've elected not to do that'.

Cook has previously called on the federal government to step in and regulate the social media site.

"If you hope to change the world, you must find your fearlessness", he said.

Unsurprisingly, Cook also took the opportunity to take a swipe at the common data collection practices in the industry. Topics include lessons he learned from Steve Jobs, including the important of "never [being] content".

'In every way, at every turn, the question we ask ourselves is not, "What can we do?",' he said, 'but, "What should we do"'. Ever since Apple itself became the center of attraction in the U.S. government's efforts to weaken encryption on smartphones and cellular networks, the company has become a poster boy for protecting users' privacy even in the face of extreme pressure. Apple made the move after it unsuccessfully fought to be exempt from a controversial new cybersecurity law in the Asian nation, but the decision alarmed privacy advocates.

In 2014, meanwhile, hackers were able to access private photographs belonging to celebrities before posting them online. The concern for privacy is more than ever and it seems like the companies are experiencing a hard time fending off these attacks.

The 57-year-old told students to be fearless like the survivors of the Parkland school shooting and activists who spoke out against the epidemic of gun violence and rallied hundreds and thousands to join their cause after 17 people were killed by a former student in February.
