Washington said it was sanctioning five members of the Shiite militia's Shura council - its top decision making forum.

The US Treasury Department announced on Wednesday fresh sanctions on the Iran-backed Lebanese "Hezbollah" party.

In a statement on its website, the US Treasury Department said that it had imposed sanctions on the members of Hezbollah Shura council in partnership with Saudi Arabia and other Persian gulf Arab states.

The measures were imposed jointly by Washington and its partners in the Terrorist Financing and Targeting Center (TFTC), which includes Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and United Arab Emirates, it said.

"Under the dictates of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force (IRGC-QF), Secretary General and head of the Shura Council Hassan Nasrallah is prolonging the human suffering in Syria, fueling the violence in Iraq and Yemen, putting the Lebanese state and the Lebanese people at risk, and destabilizing the entire region". He has also managed "Hezbollah's" bank accounts.

The military wing of Lebanon's Hezbollah and Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Naim Qassem are among the designated terrorist entities.

The announcement followed two USA moves in the past week to put pressure on Iran's financial networks, including sanctions announced Tuesday that aimed at an alleged financial pipeline that moved "hundreds of millions of dollars" from Iran's central bank through an Iraqi bank to Hezbollah.

The latest USA sanctions came one day after the Treasury Department slapped sanctions on governor of Iran's Central Bank Valiollah Seif, alleging it had funneled funds to Hezbollah. It is noted that the group is the faithful satellite of Iran, spreading the terrorist threat.

Khalil, Nasrallah's political advisor, was one of several senior "Hezbollah" commanders who shared responsibility for the group's special operations in Europe.

The U.S. move comes just over a week after Hezbollah and its political allies looked set to emerge as the most powerful alliance in Lebanon's next parliament. They call the Shia group a terrorist organization.

"These designations follow President Trump's decision last week to cease U.S. participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and to begin reimposing United States nuclear-related sanctions on the Iranian regime".
