After the vote, Murkowski described herself as "frustrated" by the politics of the net neutrality debate that she says hurts her large and rural state, which has unique internet needs. John Boozman, R-Ark., said in a written statement.

While Democrats recognize they are unlikely to reverse the FCC's rule, they see the issue as a key policy desire that energizes their base voters, a top priority ahead of the midterm elections.

Senate Democrats, joined by three Republicans, pushed through a measure Wednesday meant to revive Obama-era internet rules that ensured equal treatment for all web traffic, though opposition in the House and the White House seems insurmountable.

The 52-47 vote, which saw three Republicans vote against their own side, used the Congressional Review Act - one of the checks and balances specifically created to fix problems caused by government agencies headed up by people who think they cool, but they not. The commissions abrogate of net neutrality is scheduled to come into effect in a few weeks. "Strong consumer protections from deceptive practices, including slowing promised internet speeds, can be implemented without the heavy-handedness of net neutrality". "And it will continue to be free and open once the Restoring Internet Freedom Order takes effect on June 11".

All 49 Democrats voted in favour of the resolution, along with three Republican Senators: John Kennedy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of ME, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Neither tipped a hand until they voted a few hours earlier Wednesday to move the measure past a procedural hurdle.

Under the original net neutrality rule, internet service providers were also banned from providing faster internet access and preferred services to companies for extra fees - so called "fast lanes". If a simple majority of the latter decide for it, the resolution will be sent to President Donald Trump, who can either sign it or veto it.

Referring to a time before new regulation was introduced by the Obama administration, he said: "That's what we're going back to: rules that were in place for two decades under a light-touch regulatory approach that allowed the internet to explode and prosper and grow".

Polls have shown strong public backing for Net neutrality. The prior Administration's regulatory overreach took us in the opposite direction, reducing investment in broadband networks and particularly harming small Internet service providers in rural and lower-income areas.

"Today is a monumental day", said Democratic senator Edward Markey during a debate.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Wednesday that the solution was for lawmakers to draft Net neutrality legislation "that would safeguard consumers but still prevent regulators from stifling innovation".
