Kumaraswamy has been chosen as Assembly leader.

The latest fractured mandate has given the three main parties an opportunity to form post-poll alliances and prove their majority on the floor of the House. He told me he will take an appropriate decision.

However, they are still short of the halfway mark of 112 by seven MLAs. The party has also managed to substantially improve its seat count and vote share from the 2013 assembly election. For the past two days, Gowda has been sitting at home with Congress leaders of all hues, from Sonia Gandhi to mid-level state leaders pampering him with an irresistible offer: Accept Congress' support to make his son HD Kumaraswamy chief minister of Karnataka.

The Congress and JD-S last night challenged the swearing- in of Yeddyurappa as Karnataka chief minister in the Supreme Court which gave a midnight hearing to their petition but did not give any relief.

Even as the JD (S) LP was under way, two MLA elects - Raja Venktappa Naik and Appajirao Nadagouda - could not reach the venue on time, triggering speculation that they had switched sides, reminding people of Operation Kamala in 2008.

However, the move delivered a severe blow to the BJP's reputation as a "party with a difference". He had also said the Congress would use Karnataka as a cash cow to win other state elections.

"Yeddyurappa will turn out one-day Chief Minister?"

Responding on the case, the Supreme Court bench noted that it is necessary to peruse the letters dated May 15 and May 16 submitted by Yeddyurappa to Governor for claiming stake for government formation. Jethmalani said that Governor's decision has caused disrespect to the constitutional office that he resides in.

The letters are expected to communicate to the governor how Yeddyurappa was convinced that he had the support of the majority of members of the state assembly. The BJP, which has won 104 seats. "Before criticising us let Rahul Gandhi go to his mother and ask what was promised and why people rejected their party which was ruling (at the centre)".

Constitutional expert Subhash Kashyap told ANI that Governor has "complete power" to appoint the Chief Minister.

Earlier in the evening, Vala invited Yeddyurappa to form the government and take oath as chief minister tomorrow.

"This attempt by the BJP to poach our legislators will backfire as there are people who are willing to leave the BJP to support us (JD-S)", he claimed, adding that the JD-S and the Congress together had the required majority to form the government.

Mocking Congress for raising the specter of irregularities in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), Pandey said that this was the usual modus operandi of the Congress Party that wastes no time in blaming the machines that happen to be the same machines where they have emerged victorious.

Modi wants to secure Karnataka to keep his momentum going in the run-up to the general election.

"I may also direct you that you would seek a vote of confidence on the floor of the House showing that you command the confidence of the House".

Unlike Gujarat, which saw a clear urban-rural divide with the BJP dominating the urban belt, the Karnataka capital was closely fought.
