Red's $1300 Holographic Phone Coming to AT&T, Verizon This Summer

RED's Hydrogen One will be available at AT&T and Verizon this summer

At least now RED has unveiled which carriers will sell the phone — Verizon and AT&T. Neither carrier listed a specific launch date, with AT&T saying only that the phone would be available "later this summer". Kevin Petersen, a senior vice president at AT&T calls the RED Hydrogen One a revolutionary smartphone and says that it will change the way that people create and consume content.

It's highly unusual for the top two wireless service providers in the USA to carry the rookie smartphone effort of a company like RED, whose expertise lies elsewhere. The carrier didn't specify a firm release date (and the first RED phone is delayed as it is), but it certainly looks like the Hydrogen One is going to soon be available in stores.

If you live in or around Los Angeles, AT&T will be demoing the Hydrogen One at Warner Bros. Neither outfit commented on pricing although as you may recall, Red offered the device via pre-order for a limited time starting at $1,295 for the aluminum version and $1,595 for a titanium-clad example. That's because the phone is supposed to be the world's first holographic phone, a device that would offer users 3D-like experiences without glasses.

If that seems like a lot to ask for a smartphone, even in this age of the $999 iPhone X, Red believes the Hydrogen One's feature set justifies the price tag. This means the handset can handle not just 2D and 3D images but also mixed reality, augmented reality, and virtual reality all without added hardware.

Details of the Hydrogen One first surfaced last July. RED is no longer accepting pre-orders for the phone.
