Pope 'making history' with Chile abuse summit

VATICAN CITY, Holy See - Pope Francis said Wednesday, May 16, he was "very worried" by escalating violence in the Middle East after 60 Gazans were shot dead by Israeli troops while protesting the U.S. embassy's move to Jerusalem.

He was joined by the UK's most senior Catholic Cardinal Nichols, the archbishop of Westminster, and other church figures who said they were "horrified" Israeli troops were using live rounds against unarmed protestors in Gaza.

According to the Ministry of health in Gaza, on may 14-15, in clashes on the border killed more than 60 people, more than 3,000 injured, injury, or exposure to smoke or gas.

Pope Francis passes by a banner of Philippines' believers during a weekly general audience at St Peter's square on May 16, 2018 in Vatican.

"I invite all the parties involved and the global community to renew their commitment because dialogue, justice and peace prevail", Francis said, before leading the thousands who were gathered in St. Peter's Square in praying a Hail Mary.

"I express my great sorrow for the dead and wounded and I am close through prayer and affection to all those who suffer", said the Pope.

Speaking earlier in the audience to a group of Polish World War Two veterans, he said: "We never learn".

The pope called on the worldwide community to renew their commitment to ensure that dialogue, justice and peace prevail.

"War calls war, violence calls violence", he said.

Last December, on the same day Trump announced his decision to fulfill a campaign promise by moving the USA embassy to Jerusalem, Francis said that could not "keep silent about my deep concern" for Jerusalem and urged respect for "the status quo of the city in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations".

He said: "When I read this, I think about myself, because I'm a bishop and I'll have to take my leave". Hundreds of families across Gaza are now mourning their loved ones, dead and wounded.

"I was in Ausonia in the year '59".
