Pope Francis received his very own Lamborghini Huracan a year ago as a gift.

"The fact that this auto sold for almost three times" worth its estimate, and much higher than the model's standard retail price, is telling of how much interest it attracted'.

Built by the Lamborghini "Ad Personam" customization department, this unique and special model is painted Bianco Monocerus (white) with Giallo Tiberino (yellow) stripes running along the body in homage to the colors of the Vatican City flag.

The final selling price of 809,000 euros (£712,571) outstripped its pre-auction estimated price range of $300,000 (£220,750) to $450,000 (£331,125).

However, it wasn't the biggest sale off the vehicle lot that day. The rear-wheel-drive coupe has top speed of 199 miles per hour and a list price of $199,800.

The vehicle, which has no hubcaps, air conditioning or radio, was first bought by a US restaurant owner at auction in 1996 for $102,000 and was sold again just a few months after the pope's death in 2005, when a multimillionaire in Texas paid $690,000 at auction.

But when it was auctioned a year later, having also been blessed and signed by Francis, it went for £240,000.

The remaining money will be split equally between three charities: the Pope John XXIII Community, which helps victims of human trafficking, and two Italian associations that provide aid for women and children in Africa.
