Overwatch Anniversary Celebration Brings Tons Of Content On May 22nd

Lead designer Jeff Kaplan and his merry crew have released a new developer update in which they reveal that Overwatch has now been played by over 40 million people, meaning that the number has increased by five million since last October.

As if it needed to be said, Overwatch has proven to be an incredibly successful venture for Blizzard, with the studio set to celebrate the team-based shooter's second year of availability soon by way of an official Anniversary event at the end of this month. Kaplan took that moment to drop the detail about the lofty new player count that includes more than 40 million active players. What we do know is the game has a LOT of players.

"Petra is attractive", Kaplan said during Wednesday's Developer Update video.

Petra's release will coincide with the first free-for-all competitive Deathmatch season. "We think you'll find that very fun". And beyond new anniversary skins, players can look forward to a whole new free-for-all Deathmatch map called Petra.

"There's parts of the map that are great for open, long-range heroes, there's parts of the map that are great for short-ranged heroes". This Anniversary Loot Box will always contain an anniversary item and also has a chance to contain another item from any of Overwatch's past seasonal events. Additionally, the event will bring back all seasonal cosmetic items, as well as some past seasonal brawls. As far as more new content goes, players can check out a new batch of Anniversary skins, including eight new Legendary skins.
