Longleng: District Health Society (DHS) Longleng commemorated "International Nurses Day" at the medical superintendent's office in Longleng on May 12 under the theme "Nurses: A voice to lead-Health is a human right" organised by Trained Nurses Association India (TNAI).

Introducing the theme, Nursing tutor SON NHAK, S. Tiakala Longkumer said worldwide nurses day was celebrated based on a theme that was decided by global council of nurses to enable nurses to understand the philosophical basis of the entire practice.

Rita Angami, President, TNAI Local Branch, Kohima was awarded the Nurse of the Year during the commemoration.

"Nurses play a very important role in the lives of people and their dedication and services are recognised by all".

At present, there are 1.7 nurses per 1,000 people in India, but the world average is 2.5 nurses. Acknowledging the strong caring and compassionate attitude of the nursing community, the Health Minister said that we are proud of all the winners and wish that they will be an inspiration for all the nursing personnel in the country and motivate them to provide quality nursing services and standards. In the last few years, the number of registered nurses and other health workers has crossed 27 lakh (till March 2017), but this number is not sufficient, the President added. The nurses who have been awarded today represent the country's diversity in unity, the president said.

Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda also congratulated all the awardees and tweeted, "I congratulate all the Awardees of the Florence Nightingale Award-2018, who have been honored with this prestigious award for their exemplary service & thank each one of you for your yeoman service & contribution toward patient care and well-being of fellow citizens".

The award was instituted by Health Ministry in 1973 as a mark of recognition for the meritorious services of nurses.

It is due to increase to £400 later this year and there are suggestions that post Brexit it will be applied to European Union nationals too. The award carries '50,000 cash, a certificate, a citation and a medal.
