North Korea Summit With Trump In Doubt Because Of Military Exercises

China on Wednesday has urged both North Korea and the U.S.to create "favorable conditions" for the staging of the slated summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un amid DPRK threats to cancel the event.

"We are no longer interested in a negotiation that will be all about driving us into a corner and making a one-sided demand for us to give up our nukes", Kim said.

North Korea threatened Wednesday to withdraw from the June 12 summit in Singapore if Washington seeks to push Pyongyang into unilaterally giving up its nuclear arsenal.

Speaking at an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Trump also said he will not discuss US troop levels in South Korea during his meeting with Kim.

First, the North demanded that the USA stop joint military exercises on the peninsula with South Korea.

"The reality is this could mean a lot of things ranging from 1) nothing, to 2) DPRK [North Korea's] domestic politics to 3) a warning shot about all the USA maximum pressure talk to 4) a real change in DPRK intentions", tweeted Vipin Narang, an MIT professor who specializes in nuclear strategy.

The New York Democrat said Mr. Kim is "clearly testing the United States and President Trump, trying to see if there's any weakness or desperation or division on our side".

In a statement, the White House said: "We are aware of the South Korean media report".

China has called for the building of mutual trust through the suspension of large-scale USA and South Korean war games in return for a halt of the North's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile tests.

"Unless the serious situation which led to the suspension of the north-south high-level talks is settled, it will never be easy to sit face-to-face again with the present regime of South Korea", the official KCNA news agency cited top negotiator Ri Son Gwon as saying on Thursday.

In addition to brandishing threats over the slated meeting with Mr Trump, North Korea cancelled high-level talks due Wednesday with Seoul over the Max Thunder joint military exercises being held between the USA and South Korea, denouncing the drills as a "rude and wicked provocation". Thunderstorms battered Seoul as the North announced that it was cancelling high-level talks with the South to which it had agreed barely 24 hours earlier. Then, the North issued a statement that if the USA demands that the regime dismantle its nuclear arsenal before the summit, then there will be no summit. -South Korea joint exercise, along with those between the three allies, as key pillars of deterrence in the region.

On Tuesday, a DPRK state media article published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced the cancellation of a planned inter-Korean meeting on the same day over the Max Thunder joint U.S. -ROK military exercises now being staged in South Korea.

In a related development, South Korean foreign minister Kang Kyung-hwa spoke with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo early Wednesday morning.
