New York City nanny to be sentenced in killing of two children

- A Manhattan judge sentenced former nanny Yoselyn Ortega to life in prison with no possibility of parole for slaughtering two children in her care, Lucia and Leo Krim, in 2012.

Yoselyn Ortega had worked for Marina and Kevin Krim for two years when she killed two of their children, 6-year-old Lulu and 2-year-old Leo, on October 25, 2012.

The six-woman, six-man jury rejected her defense team's contention that Ortega was mentally unfit and was in a "psychotic" and "dissociative" state when she attacked the children. "My life is in the hands of God". Prosecutors said the motive was Ortega's mounting financial troubles and her deep resentment of the Krims.

"She did it intentionally with a full understanding of exactly what it was she was doing-every stab, every slash", ADA Stuart Silberg said in his closing. Krim says Ortega has shown no remorse and no one in her family has said sorry.

Kevin Krim said his family introduced "Lulu and Leo's law", which will make it a crime to falsify job applications and references for someone working in childcare, to NY state legislature in "direct response" to the case.

Ortega was convicted last month in the deaths of 6-year-old Lucia Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim and was sentenced Monday. When Ortega didn't arrive on time Krim grew concerned and returned to her home to check on the children.

The victims' parents, Marina Krim and Kevin Krim, each read their own victim impact statements in court, recounting memories of the children who were murdered in their own home.

The children's mother found them in a bathroom.

The 55-year-old Ortega is from the Dominican Republic. The girl was stabbed more than 30 times and the boy was stabbed five times.

At the sentencing, Marina Krim talked about what that crime scene may have done to Nessie, even though she has grown into a strong, happy child.

"I ask for a great deal of forgiveness from God, from Marina, from Kevin", she said. "But we will try to answer her questions with sensitivity the best we can". "It was real", Krim told jurors.

Her lawyer said she suffers from psychosis, depression and heard voices telling her to kill the children.
