Close on the heels of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in an informal setting in Wuhan in April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russian Federation on 21 May for an informal summit with President Vladimir Putin at the beach resort of Sochi.

Sources said Modi would most likely reassure Putin of India's commitment to consolidate ties with Russian Federation in defence, nuclear energy, trade and other key sectors.

The statement said, this visit will be an important occasion for the two leaders to exchange views on worldwide matters in a broad and long-term perspective.

Both the leaders will also exchange their views on their "respective national developmental priorities and bilateral matters".

The Sochi summit is in keeping with the tradition of regular consultations between India and Russian Federation, the MEA said.

Putin is also expected to visit India later this year for the annual bilateral summit. Modi will meet Putin for the BRICS summit in South Africa and again in Argentina for the G-20 summit.

The Modi-Putin summit will be followed swiftly by Modi travelling to Indonesia and Singapore, and then China for the SCO summit.

Rosoboronexport has long-standing significant contracts and business ties with India and other countries.

As observed during the Indo-Chinese informal summit in Wuhan, there will be no deliverables or agreements announced after the Sochi summit. The national security advisor also held talks with Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev besides calling on Lavrov, an Indian Embassy statement said. However, sources made it clear that Russian Federation was and would most likely remain the biggest arms supplier to India.

This message had to be conveyed against a backdrop of deteriorating US-Russia relations which has ignited a budding Russia-China alliance. Ever since the Trump administration made a decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal, alleging that Tehran is not fulfilling its commitments, the global community has been working overtime to salvage the deal.

The summit comes at a time when an anti-US containment strategy has resulted in a strengthened Russia-Pakistan military cooperation.

At the same time, India has become entwined into the fracas between Moscow and Washington with concerns that Indian purchase of S-400 missile defence system would trigger USA sanctions related to CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act of 2017). Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in the Kremlin.
