TV Producer Dies After E-Cigarette Explodes, Lodges in His Skull

According to FEMA, the 38-year-old's death is the first in the US to be caused by a vaping pen. Officials found him with a wound to his top lip area and areas of burns to his body.

D'Elia's death is the first in the United States caused by a vape pen, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which keeps statistics on e-cigarettes.

Tallmadge Wakeman D'Elia died on Cinco de Mayo in St. Petersburg after his vape pen burst into flames in his bedroom.

Gary Wilder told ABC he refuses to sell the devices, fearing they will overheat. The medical examiner says D'Elia's cause of death was listed as "projectile wound of head".

Between January 2009 and December 2016, there were 95 reported incidents of explosions and fire involving an electronic cigarette, resulting in 133 injuries, 38 of which were severe, the U.S. Fire Administration said. The autopsy noted that the e-cigarette was manufactured by Smok-E Mountain and was a "mod" type device.

A representative from Smok-E Mountain told ABC Action News that their devices do not explode.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said the cause of these explosions could stem from battery-related issues, but hasn't pinpointed the exact reason for them.

One store selling vaping devices says the e-cigarettes come with "no safety features and no regulation".

Though such incidents are rare, this isn't the first time a spontaneous e-cigarette explosion has raised concerns.

He explained: 'Any other e-cig that has a computer chip in it prevents that from happening'.

Experts fault the lithium ion batteries used in e-cigarettes.

Deputy fire marshal Steven Lawrence, who attended the scene, said vape pens can "become pieces of flying debris and shrapnel".

In 2016, a vaping device blew up in a man's face in NY - knocking out his teeth, ripping a hole in his tongue and leaving his hands covered in burns.
