Iran's Zarif Hails 'Constructive Meeting' With EU On Nuclear Deal

Nuclear deal talks in Vienna

During his visit to the Belgian capital, Zarif will hold talks with his British, German, and French counterparts as well as EU's Mogherini on the future of the nuclear deal.

Indeed, the major reasons for the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear program are not linked to the agreement itself, but to Washington's approach to Tehran's policy in the Middle East, Ryabkov said.

The EU hopes to convince Tehran to continue to adhere to the accord.

"We don't want the USA pullout from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to become a prelude for a further spike in military tensions in the Middle East, although the danger of this is evident", Ryabkov said, adding, "This danger followed the U.S. decision and what happened then is growing, according to our assessments".

Russian Federation will comply with its liabilities within framework of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action regarding the Iranian nuclear program to reconfigure the Fordow enrichment facility.

"In this meeting, we exchanged views on the necessity of all remaining sides' abidance by the JCPOA, guarantee to Iran to fully tap the benefits of the agreement, and the point that these benefits were based on the shared opinion of Iran and the European Union", recounted the Iranian diplomatic chief.

The top Iranian diplomat is scheduled to take part in a joint meeting with foreign ministers of France, Germany and Britain as well as Federica Mogherini today afternoon.

The two leaders reiterated their commitment to the Iran accord in the phone call, the Kremlin press service said in a statement.

Washington's decision to go against its European allies' advice and abandon the deal has pushed them closer to Beijing and Moscow on the issue as diplomats scramble to keep the pact alive.

However, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, speaking on May 15 at a meeting in Moscow of the Valdai Discussion Club - a gathering of Russian and worldwide foreign policy experts - said it would be impossible to preserve the deal without Tehran making concessions, the Interfax news agency reported.

"Russia and Iran must defend their interests together in light of the nuclear agreement", Lavrov said.

France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on May 14 that France, Britain, and Germany were determined to save the nuclear deal, saying, "The US leaving an global agreement does not mean that the worldwide agreement is null and void".

Iran's foreign minister says talks with the EU's foreign policy chief in Brussels were "constructive".

But European diplomats briefed on the Brussels meeting acknowledged that the EU support, however honest, risked looking hollow after Trump last week reimposed an array of wide sanctions on the Islamic Republic that will hit European companies investing in Iran.

He also criticized Washington continuously seeking to revise important global agreements, saying: "Unfortunately, once again we see that Washington is seeking to revise key worldwide agreements".
