Most of the dead were killed by Israeli fire near the border.

Sisulu's deputy, Luwellyn Landers, said: "Effectively the United States removed itself as the honest broker between Israel and Palestine".

Palestinians see the eastern part of Jerusalem as their capital while Israel considers the entire city its capital. Trump tweeted earlier Monday.

A senior Hamas leader, Khalil Al-Hayya, told Reuters that Monday's protest was scheduled at the same time as the "deplorable crime of moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem".

A Palestinian woman walks through black smoke from burning tires during a protest on the Gaza Strip's border with Israel Monda.

A photo of the man knocking the canister away was taken on Monday, when Palestinian protests drastically intensified in reaction to the USA moving its embassy to Jerusalem.

The toll included a baby who died from tear gas inhalation along with eight children under the age of 16, the ministry said. One of the minors was identified as a girl. Of the wounded, 130 were in serious or critical condition.

Trump administration officials have said their peace plan, whose chief architects are the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt, is almost complete.

"We will also act through the United Nations and we have given our support to the United Nations secretary general in his call for an independent investigation in to this matter".

Many critics of Trump's decision to move the US embassy suggest that it was primarily done to please his conservative evangelical base.

For Hamas, which seized Gaza in 2007, Monday's border protest was the culmination of a weekslong campaign to try to break the blockade.

The march was also directed at the inauguration of the embassy.

In contrast to the scenes in Gaza, Israeli dignitaries and guests attended a ceremony in Jerusalem to open the US Embassy following its relocation from Tel Aviv. The sides have largely observed a cease-fire since the 2014 war - their third in a decade.

This is the largest number of fatalities suffered in one day since the latest round of protests began more than six weeks ago, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced.

American presidents of both parties have been hesitant to move the USA embassy from Tel Aviv for fear of fanning further violence in the turbulent region.

The White House as well as US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley have thus far placed sole responsibility for the violence on the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and fervently defended Israel's right to defend itself.

Tuesday's delayed demonstrations could grow since May 15 is the annual observation of Naqba Day, or Catastrophe Day, which mourns Israel gaining statehood and the displacement of the Palestinians.

The U.S. said it chose the date to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment. "Today we are here to send a message to Israel and its allies that we will never give up on our land", he said.

The move has delighted Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who welcomed the decision, saying it reflected that "the Jewish people have had a capital for 3,000 years, and that it is called Jerusalem".

"Turkish protesters hold placards that read " Free Palestine" and " Struggle to return back home continue for 70 years " as they stage a protest near the US embassy in Ankara, Turkey, May 15, 2018.

The Palestinians say they have lost faith in the Trump administration to act as a fair mediator and have boycotted the process since President Donald Trump's Jerusalem announcement in December.

"I don't know of any army that would do anything differently if you had to protect your border against people who say, 'We're going to destroy you, and we're going to flood into your country, '" Netanyahu told Glor.

The Israeli military said it was gearing up for renewed confrontations, while Palestinian groups said they planned to rein in the protests.
