Most referrals (56%) in England came from primary schools.

Almost a third of referrals from schools to CAMHS, for Trusts across England who were able to provide the information, over the last three years were declined treatment as they did not meet the criteria for support.

The total number of referrals since 2014 was 1,305.

In nearly a third of referrals for which data is available, children were denied specialist treatment from Child and Adolescent Mental health Services (CAMHS). It's believed community and voluntary services, such as the helpline, are a lifeline to rejected children.

However, the RSSB says that emerging findings from its research, "Understanding the conditions for successful mental health training for managers", suggest that there are untapped benefits in better line management training, meaning that staff could be better supported in getting the right treatment and returning to work.

The charity's figures are based on a Freedom of Information request it made to NHS trusts in England.

By tackling stress, we can go a long way to tackle mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

The study also revealed that only one in five companies used mental health first aid training and other well-known interventions.

In 2017/18 there were 325 referrals made from county schools for young people in the 12-15 age bracket.

Childline, which is run by the NSPCC, has reported a 26 per cent increase in the number of counselling sessions with children about mental health issues over the past four years.

Peter Wanless, NSPCC Chief Executive, said, 'Our research shows schools are increasingly referring children for specialist mental health treatment, often when the child is at crisis point'.

Sarah Hannafin, senior policy adviser on mental health and wellbeing for the school leaders' union NAHT, said headteachers were concerned Camhs is setting treatment thresholds too high.

The government has pledged to introduce four-week maximum waiting times for Camhs but it has been criticised because they will apply only to up to a quarter of England by 2022-23.

The NSPCC says the statistics have highlighted the urgent need for a broader range of support services for mental health needs and is now calling on central government to invest more funding into early support services for children.

Esther Rantzen, the Childline founder and president said: "We must make sure that Childline is adequately funded so it isn't left vulnerable and can be there for the children who have nowhere else to turn".

The number of referrals to mental health services in Herts and Cambs is on the rise.
