Hamilton cruises to victory in Spain

Vettel said that the drivers have not been consulted on rule changes

Sebastian Vettel could finish only fourth as the Mercedes driver extended his Formula One lead to 17 points, though he and his team chief, Toto Wolff, warned they would not expect to enjoy such superiority at the next grand prix in Monaco. He also struggled with the balance of the auto and in the end could only finish fourth. The closest Vettel came to matching Hamilton's pace in his first stint was on laps 12, 13 and 16, when Vettel's times were around 0.4s down, still a huge deficit. "Both Valtteri and Lewis have been on top form and the vehicle has been reliable and very fast".

"This is more like it", said Hamilton on the slowing down lap after crossing the line a mammoth 20 seconds ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas and almost half a minute ahead of fourth-placed Ferrari-rival Vettel.

Red Bull Racing might not be leading the grid, but these two are certainly the cars to watch. 'We have seen there are tracks which suit us well and some that we are not ideal at.

Lewis Hamilton said his world championship defence has been revived by victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.

"We learned various things on how to work on track like this one", said the German. Though there was no rain on the plain in Spain today, the sport's governing body still wanted to test the lights in the hope of introducing them next season.

Both Hamilton and Wolff said they had concerns that they might not be able to keep up the momentum at the next race in Monaco on 24-27 May, however, where Mercedes struggled a year ago.

That changed in Spain, as the Ferrari drivers struggled to get the best out of the tyres and struggled with wear. Ferrari had a race to forget as Vettel could only manage fourth following a late-race call to the pits.

"So that's why I'm only partly celebrating".

"We do after the five races now have a much, much better understanding of the vehicle, of what we need to do to get the auto to be working - but we still have learning to do, improvements to be made". To get the one-two, it's such a great result for everyone.

"Unfortunately very often there is a meeting and they don't come to the meeting". On rejoining the race, Vettel got behind Verstappen and his fate was sealed.

Daniel Ricciardo, meanwhile, had an anonymous race.

The race restarted at the end of the sixth lap in the same positions and was running smoothly, but then things started to go wrong for Ferrari.

"In the following races, we struggled in many areas and all that adds up and was in all our minds".

But the first lap wasn't even over when disaster struck.

On to Monaco next, where I've been this weekend driving at the Historic Grand Prix weekend in a Williams that Keke Rosberg won the race in back in 1983.

Kimi Raikkonen's race in Catalonia was yet again one to forget. Valtteri Bottas delivered probably his best qualifying lap of the season there in 2017.
