Glover asked those in attendance to support teachers and other unionized employees, frequently recounting Dr. Martin Luther King's work alongside impoverished people.

Maryland Poor People's Campaign announced Monday it would be participating as one of 30 similar actions groups planned across the country over the next 40 days.

Columbia police say they met with group organizers last week to discuss their plans.

Rev. Barber also led a variation on the chant: "What do we want?"

After Maryland Capitol Police gave three warnings to protesters that protestors in the street faced arrest, officers detained 11 people and issued citations for obstructing free passage and failure to obey a lawful order, said Nick Cavey, spokesman for the Maryland Department of General Services. Communities across the US will mobilize around the Poor People's Campaign Ecological Devastation week of action happening the first week of June.

All across the country people gathered at state capitol buildings for the national event.

Sylvia Orduno is with the campaign and the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization.

At issue are several policies they believe are heartless, if not cruel, to poor people.

The campaign wants a massive overhaul of voting rights laws, new programs to get people out of poverty, and measures to boost the economy in favor of working people.

The alliance formed by Barber and Theoharis is made up of Christians, Jews, Muslims, nonbelievers, and a broad cross section of African-Americans, Hispanics, LGBT people feminists, environmentalists and others.

Monday's rally kicked off 40 days of protest and voter mobilization here in ME and across the country, leading up to a rally in Washington, D.C. next month.
