MI5 chief lashes Putin for 'malign' Salisbury attack: Spymaster targets Russia's 'fog of lies' and its leader's 'pernicious

Andrew Parker, speaking to reporters in Berlin after the first public speech outside Britain by a serving head of MI5, underscored the importance of joining forces to combat what he called increasing cyber and propaganda attacks by Russian Federation.

The leader of Britain's domestic spy agency is scheduled to deliver a speech Monday in Berlin to his European counterparts, the first speech ever made outside Britain by a serving MI5 chief.

In his first public comments since the deadly nerve agent attack in the town of Salisbury on a former Russian spy and his daughter, Parker said that Moscow is using its spies and military to carry out "flagrant breaches of global rules".

Russian Federation under President Vladimir Putin, he said, had sought to regain the clout it lost after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 by carrying out "aggressive and pernicious actions" with its military and intelligence services.

"But its repeated choices have been to pursue that aim through aggressive and pernicious actions by its military and intelligence services".

Skripal remains in hospital following the attack on March 4, but Yulia and a police officer injured in the incident have been discharged from hospital.

In a speech in Berlin on Monday, he told European intelligence agencies how Russian Federation had come up with at least 30 different explanations for the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in Salisbury in March.

Parker also condemned what he called a disinformation campaign mounted by Russian Federation following the attack.

Counter-terrorism police have not yet identified a suspect in the attempted murder of the Skripals, who fell victim to a nerve agent poisoning from the Novichok family of substances.

Russian Federation denied any involvement in the Salisbury attack and challenged Britain to prove Moscow was to blame.

Russian officials suggested the United Kingdom had carried out the attack to stoke anti-Russian hysteria.

Mr Parker accused the Russian State of carrying out a nerve agent attack in Salisbury, supporting the Syrian government despite its use of chemical weapons on civilians, invading Crimea, seeking to interfere in elections in the USA and France, attempting to mount a coup in Montenegro and carrying out cyber attacks on Western institutions.

"Bare-faced lying seems to be the default mode, coupled with ridicule of critics", Parker said.
