South African bishops condemn mosque attack that leaves one dead

KZN police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed that bomb disposal units were on scene to verify the nature of the device. "They confirmed that its mechanism is explosive".

"It was moved by a worshipper", said Rusa head Prem Balram, who posted the information on the company's WhatsApp media group and Facebook pages at 7.15pm on Sunday. It was attached to a cellphone, according to local news site eNCA.

Police said the motive for the attack was unknown, but community activists said it might be sectarian violence as the mosque belongs to the Shia community.

It was discovered just hours after police minister Bheki Cele and a delegation of top police brass had toured the building as a part of a press tour following a fatal knife-attack last week.

Police are still searching for the suspects.

Emmanuel Cathedral and Jumma Masjid mosque are neighbors in central Durban, and their members work together, serving the city's poor in the Denis Hurley Centre, which is positioned between them, Williams said in a May 11 telephone interview.

"We can't say too much now but the guys were getting the place ready‚ partitioning off the damaged sections of the place that were burnt‚ and they found the bomb near the pulpit". The mosque and houses around were evacuated in the wake of the discovery.

Police said the device was discovered on Sunday three days after the attack at the mosque by three men armed with guns and knives. They proceeded to stab moulana Ali Nchinyane and Muhammad Ali. Several rooms were also set alight during the attack. His throat was slit and he later died in hospital.

He became a collateral casualty in the attack‚ believed to be motivated by "extremist elements" intent on killing the resident moulana and razing the building.
